Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 Defined

Match test class to installation location.

Type 1

Tested with impulse current (Iimp, often 10/350 µs related). Used where partial lightning current may appear—typically service entrance with LPS or overhead exposure.

Type 2

Tested with 8/20 µs nominal discharge current. The workhorse for distribution boards.

Type 3

Lower energy, installed near equipment to refine residual voltage. Often complements Type 2 upstream.
